2013/10/192013/10/28 Consumer Hack – Solo Cup LED Bug Light ! Since it’s Saturday Project time, I’m sharing my new invention… Solo Cup LED Bug Light (*** See Warning Below ***) I use yellow lights outside because I don’t like attracting bugs (and spiders) around the GubMints Lanai. I’m tired of the crappy FEIT Electric CFL Bug Lights (below)- They cost 5 bucks and their lifespan runs from a few weeks to a few months. The particular bulb in this photo lasted less than a month and is headed back to the recycle bin at Home Depot: These Bulbs Suck. I’ve searched online for LED bug lights as an alternative, but the LED bug bulbs are underpowered and/or very pricey. As I was troubleshooting the fixture this morning (to make sure it wasn’t a wiring or switch problem), I inserted a spare LED bulb to test the socket…. I reached past multi-colored Solo cups to find this spare bulb…. And then it hit me- Why not create my own LED Bug Lite using the original fixture and a Yellow Solo Cup trimmed to fit inside? I’ll let the photos do the talking: LED 60W Equivalent, uses ~2.5W Trim the Solo Cup to fit… All Done! If you want the link to the jelly-jar outdoor light fixture (~$11), it’s here. *** WARNING ! Do not use a ‘regular’ incandescent bulb or CFL bulb for this project – The heat will melt the cup and/or start a fire *** Subscribe to GubMints: via RSS: via Email: Related Consumer Consumer Hacks ConsumerConsumer HacksEnergy Savings
